ABSTRACT
DESCRIPTION OF TOPIC:
Obesity during pregnancy presents significant health risks for both the mother and the fetus and is an increasing challenge in maternity care worldwide. The complexity of care for obese pregnant women requires an individualized and evidence-based approach that considers both medical risks and the emotional and psychosocial needs of the woman. International guidelines on the antenatal care of obese pregnant women are generally aligned in content but often lack methodological clarity and consistency. This master's thesis aimed to address these gaps by developing a context-specific, human-centered antenatal care guideline for obese pregnant women at the Women’s Clinic of East Tallinn Central Hospital, using the structured DMAIC model as a development framework.
RELEVANCE TO MIDWIFERY:
Midwives play a central role in antenatal care and are often the primary point of contact for pregnant women throughout their maternity journey. The increasing prevalence of maternal obesity has created a clear need for midwives to be supported by structured, evidence-based guidelines that enhance the quality and consistency of care. This thesis directly responds to midwives' expressed needs by involving them in the development process through written interviews and incorporating their clinical insights into the guideline. The resulting tool aims to support midwives in delivering person-centered care, improve collaboration with other healthcare professionals, and ultimately ensure safer, more effective antenatal care for obese pregnant women.
