ABSTRACT
THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) remains the leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide [1]. The non-pneumatic anti-shock garment (NASG) was developed as a low-tech, cost-effective compression device to stabilize hypovolemic shock resultant from PPH. NASG has been recommended by the World Health Organization, International Confederation of Midwives, International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics, and UNICEF as part of an evidence-based PPH treatment bundle [1,2,3]. Despite this, the use of NASG has not scaled up adequately to the global maternal health need [1]. A recent systematic review and meta-analysis of NASG utilization in Ethiopia identified that knowledge and training were significantly associated with four and five times higher odds of NASG utilization by healthcare providers, respectively [4]. The purpose of this skills workshop is to promote the utilization of NASG for the treatment of PPH by providing knowledge and training to workshop participants. Participants will learn about the purpose and criteria for NASG use as part of a postpartum hemorrhage treatment bundle. Participants will also demonstrate proper application, monitoring, and removal of NASG.

THE PROCESS/ACTIVITIES:
15 minutes of general presentation and demonstration of NASG, followed by 30 minutes of hands-on practice with NASG in small groups.

AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION:
The hands-on portion will consist of four identical stations where audience participants can practice applying and removing the NASG. Each station will be facilitated by a presenter who is also able to answer questions. Additional reading United Nations Children’s Fund. Nonpneumatic Anti-Shock Garment (NASG). UNICEF.
