ABSTRACT
PURPOSE:
Internationally, reflective and evidence-based Advanced Midwifery Practice (AMP) is being introduced (for example in Ireland, United Kingdom and Switzerland). The peripartum period, a crucial life phase, faces growing challenges from demographic, social, and political changes. Midwives, as experts, can play a key role as advanced practice midwives to address these complex issues.

DISCUSSION:
There are currently no standard definitions of the professional role of advanced practical midwives, either internationally or nationally in Germany. The differentiation between basic and advanced competencies is hindered by the absence of a globally consistent definition of midwives’ scope of responsibilities. As a result, healthcare systems often develop fragmented structures, leading to overprovision in certain population groups while underserving others. Despite this lack of global uniformity, several countries have implemented advanced midwifery roles that align closely with the core values and competency frameworks of the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM).

EVIDENCE WHERE RELEVANT:
To develop the role of advanced practice midwives in Germany, the University of Cologne will launch an interprofessional master’s program in winter 2025/26. The four-semester Advanced Midwifery Practice program includes 14 modules, some taught in English. It focuses on four areas: Advanced Practice, Management & Leadership, Research, and Education & Communication. Three modules feature practical internships, offered with partners in Germany and abroad.

KEY MESSAGE:
Establishing an advanced role model for midwives who care for individuals navigating both peripartum experiences and complex psychosocial challenges is crucial for societal well-being and the ongoing professionalization of midwifery. Poster session 3 (Group B)
