A cross-sectional study on the use of artificial intelligence-supported tools in theoretical and clinical midwifery education among midwifery students in Turkiye

ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing health education. Nevertheless, in spite of its potential to improve learning outcomes, the factors influencing its adoption and use among midwifery students remain understudied.

OBJECTIVES:
To identify factors influencing the use of AI-enabled tools in theoretical and clinical midwifery education among students in Turkiye.

METHODS:
This is an online cross-sectional study involving midwifery students in Turkiye. The questionnaire was created using Google Forms and distributed to department heads through their institutional e-mail addresses. The researchers used a Demographic Information Form and an AI Utilization Form to collect data. Data collection began on May 19, 2025, and will continue through fall semester. SPSS was used for analysis, with significant variables examined using multiple linear regression.

RESULTS:
Preliminary findings showed that 693 female students from universities in seven geographical regions of Turkiye participated, with a mean age of 20.97 ± 2.65 years. Most were enrolled in public universities and had used AI tools (92.8%). The most frequently used tools were ChatGPT, Siri, Gemini and Duolingo. AI usage in midwifery education increased by 83.7%, with clinical settings utilizing it for research, assignment completion, case analysis, disease investigation, medication information, patient histories, and care plan development. Age-related AI use was 1.08 and 1.09 times higher among students with computer access and AI training. Utilization was significantly lower among those living in rural areas (p ≤ 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS:
Integrating AI tools into midwifery education needs to improve digital access, develop AI literacy, provide structured training and address regional inequalities; especially in rural areas.

KEY MESSAGE:
Improving access to AI tools, enhancing knowledge about AI and clearly communicating their educational benefits can increase students' confidence and promote greater adoption in midwifery education. Poster session 3 (Group B)
